N Scale CMX Clean Machine Application Notes

Buy CMX Clean Machine

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your suggestions regarding my N scale CMX track cleaning car. I tried your suggestion removing the spring under the cleaning pad and the derailments diminished. I reduced the spring's length putting it on the end of a screwdriver and stretching it in reverse until I reduced its height by about 30%.

In investigating how the cleaning pad snatching on Peco turnouts I discovered that some of the turnouts have a thin spring wire that protrudes vertically from the center of the points throw bar enough to catch on the cleaning pad. I ground down the spring wire flush with the throw bar and eliminated that problem.

Sometimes the needle valve was hard to turn and I put some faucet grease on the rubber O-ring and now the valve turns freely. The other improvement I made was to change the 33" metal wheels for 36" metal wheels.

I use my cleaning car every couple of weeks even though all my freight car wheels are metal. My biggest problem is dust and contamination on the track. The CMX car does a fine job of getting the track clean.
