Installing a decoder in the HO Atlas MP1500

Limited space above the decoder plug in this locomotive presents a challenge for fitting a decoder. The NCE N14IP decoder is a good fit for this limited space. A small tab on the exhaust stack insert of the body shell protrudes inside the shell and keeps the shell from fully seating down on the decoder (see illustration directly below). A simple solution is to remove the lower portion of this tab on the rear of the stack insert (see circled areas in two smaller pictures farther below)
