Paul Turvill's Report
QSI's Quantum Q1 sound modules that have been installed in over 250,000 locomotives by Atlas, Broadway Ltd, Intermountain, Walthers Proto 2000 and
others give the users scale mph speed indications. All these locomotives
were calibrated by QSI so that essentially when operating using the 128
speed step range the locomotive actual speed in scale miles per hour was
equal to the speeds steps shown on the DCC throttle. This is another
exclusive feature of the QSI units
so if an operator was showing speed step 25 on his DCC throttle/cab the
locomotive was traveling at 25 scale mph.
This speed calibration was done by QSI for each individual loco the
manufacturers equipped with the Quantum sounds.
Now that the next generation - Q2 - of the Quantum products are also
being designed
for aftermarket applications, the calibrations for implementing the scale
mph speeds must be done by the users if they choose to know the scale mph of
their loco with respect to the DCC throttle/cab indications.
QSI has built this exclusive feature into the software for all the Q2
series G scale Quantum Aristo, "O/G" scale Quantum Magnum, the HO scale
Quantum Revolution due in January and the Quantum UCS for both 3 rail and 2 rail "O" scale due in early 2008.
The Quantum Aristo and Magnum are in production, Paul Turvill has done the
speed calibration for a Magnum installation in his LGB Mogul and has taken
the time to write this report.
