Broadway Limited has just announced the planned release of several C-16 2-8-0 narrow gauge On30 Steam Locos complete and ready to run with DCC and DC QSI sound.
This bold move is sure to put more pressure on other loco manufacturers to compete in this new field of quality loco offerings with DCC and DC sound. Broadway's meteoric rise from an unknown to a leader in the industry, a big plus for all users, is probably a headache for the competition!
D&RGW C-16 2-8-0 in On30 Scale!
One of the fastest growing segments of model railroading is On30 Scale, which allows O Scale narrow gauge equipment to run on HO Scale track component.
In prototype, there were of course various narrow gauges used such as 2 ft. between the rails – mostly in the state of Maine, and the more common gauge of 3 ft. between the rails, which was the predominant arrangement in Colorado as well as on many logging railroads. On30 by definition spaces the rails 2 ½ feet apart, which is very close indeed to standard HO Scale track.
BLI’s first choice for this market is an "iconic" narrow gauge prototype: The D&RGW C-16 2-8-0 with sound that can be operated with a standard DC power pack as well as with DCC controls. There were 82 D&RGW C-16’s built in the late 1800’s by Baldwin and Grant, and 3 of them are still in existence. The C-16’s went through various rebuilding programs during their service life, but all had 15"x20" cylinders and 36" diameter drivers. Some were sold or leased to other companies, which makes them quite a universal little locomotive. The D&RGW C-16 was a basic narrow gauge Baldwin 2-8-0, and as such other roads had similar locomotives, including the Pennsylvania RR as the CM&StP, so we will offer those paint schemes as well.
BLI’s models will feature 2 versions in various painting schemes:
D&RGW #268 with round domes and #278 with fluted domes. We will also letter some models for other owners, such as the Rio Grande Southern, New Mexico Lumber Co., Nevada County Narrow Gauge RR and Montezuma Lumber Co. The D&RGW #268 will also be available painted in the standard black freight colors as well as the "Bumble Bee" scheme, which was used for the 1949 Chicago Railroad Fair.
